A night at the opera: Elektra (R. Strauss)

For the libretto of this masterpiece in the history of 20th-century opera, poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal created a dramatic work which, whilst finding inspiration in the tragedy of Euripides, focuses on Electra’s obsessive desire for revenge following the murder of her father Agamemnon by her mother, Clytemnestra. The mother-daughter relationship, as well as the heroine’s fascination with her dead father, reflects the author’s interest in the early writings of Sigmund Freud. Electra is driven by her one desire: to commit matricide. In this one-act opera, extreme psychological tensions and an exploration of the depths of the human soul are translated by a musical style verging on the limits of tonality. Guy Joosten returns to La Monnaie with a burning and distressing work which ends in a bloody climax.
