What motivates Macbeth? What is the meaning of this series of murders? Does bloodshed lead to bloodshed? Does war lead to madness? How to endure the lack of an heir that might have saved you? And who is Lady Macbeth? How can a dream or nightmare of power be suppressed? How is it that we take pleasure in one of Shakespeare’s darkest stories? This is a tale of mire, night and death.
With Macbeth, Giuseppe Verdi opened new perspectives for musical theatre. Dramatic truth prevails over the classical requirements of bel canto thanks to an original combination of drama and music and a precise and complex characterisation of the main roles. Two years after Médée, stage director Krzysztof Warlikowski returns to La Monnaie to explore another facet of evil.
